The German artists and the fleeing personas

The general atmosphere of the exhibition of four artists from Düsseldorf is sombre. Although the subject of the painting is the warmth of light, the light seems to be filtered through a cool objectivity.

The exhibition corresponds so closely to the preconception of German contemporary art that it inevitably evokes the question of possible self-irony. The most obvious expectation of the German state of mentality is that of a post-nazi anxiety and that of a romantic angst of the Werther effect.

Markus Rosada, Nina Fandler, Michael Falkenstein and Gesine Kikol, however, do not represent any particular style. What unites them is basically their taking a stand of self-conscious distance.

Mainly the works by Rosada and Falkenstein unravel the anxiety. Rosada´s grey works appeal through their serenity and insinuating references. The languid melancholy give way to hidden swastikas. The overly repeated symbol of terror, nevertheless, gains impressive effectiveness in Rosada´s works.

The large woodcuts by Falkenstein seem archaic, although the subject may be a symbol of the contemporary culture of consumerism, e.g. a person such as Paul Stanley.

Art is not something to throw oneself into, not even for the most expressionistic artist in the exhibition. There is nothing hideous (or awkward) in the way Kikol paints, although that is what one might expect when looking at animals and vegetables copulating in her paintings.

Fandler paints light in a very skillful way. She paints light which is something organic, only briefly visible and nearly illusional. The glimpse of light is for Fandler a moment of a nearly supernatural opening. In the Fandler´s unnatural light one feels the intimacy of the experience.

Wurmloch in Kaulsdorf

Ich bin leider nicht da, aber ihr findet dort z.B. ein Wurmloch. Und es wird bestimmt toll, am Samstag:

Location, Location, Location- der Friedrichshainer Kunstraum `Kapitalistischer Realismus` agiert, mutiert, explodiert im August 2007 zur `richtigen` Galerie- und wie tut man das am Besten? Richtig, man lässt die alte, runtergewirtschafte Altbau- Wohnungsgalerie in Friedrichshain einfach fallen wie sonst nur leergeschossene Kalaschnikows und etabliert sich gesellschaftlich, z.B. in dem man in einer alten Villa in einem schicken Ostberliner `Suburb` niederlässt, z.b. Kaulsdorf. Von einer hundertjährigen Stadtvilla aus, einstmals erbaut vom Schriftsteller von der Planitz, will man dann weiter ganz offen weitere Guerillaktionen in Sachen Entdeckung interessanter, engagierter junger Künstler planen und durchführen: z.B. Vernissagen alle 14 Tage, verbunden mit lässig- mondänen Umtrunken in der Villa und in dem nicht unwilden Garten. Wer etwas anderes sucht als ordentliche Kunst in einem weiteren ordentlichen White-Cube, sollte sich auf den Weg nach Ol`downtown Kaulsdorf
machen: mit der S5 fährt man z.B. vom Hackeschen Markt direkt nach Kaulsdorf, etwas mehr als zwanzig Minuten- dort ist es gerade mal eine Minute Fußweg, denn die gleichnamige Planitzstr. beginnt gleich am S-Bhf...
